Awaas has many talented residents. People with the gift of a good voice and musical ability who contribute to the evening prayer ceremony in the room used as a temple (mandir) .Those with the ability accompany the hymn singing with drums and shakers. Sainath plays the dolak, a long double ended drum, the ends giving different sounds. He plays different rhythms with each hand, now and again as the song demands. he adds a foot tapping, all this while doing the singing too. The ladies shake sticks with small cymbals on them
There are two professional artists in Awaas. Prakash is also a keen photographer and we hope he will share some of his pictures on this blog site. Sainath likes to paint and being a Maharastrian he is particularly attached to the tribal style of art in this region known as Warli. This week he has made a picture representing the joy people feel when the Monsoon arrives, with people dancing and playing musical instruments.
