The Year End


A Christmas treat for everybody was  lunch at the local Narayani Dham restaurant. A very good lunch was enjoyed by all, including me, as they made special non-chilly dishes for me!


December 30th was the occasion for the filly races and the special one for the male staff. The courtyard plants were moved aside so that the lady staff and the men could entertain us.

The younger staff ran the length of the angan and back again. The three fastest ran again and Manisha was the winner.
The three fastest then ran with a bucket of water,




 Phulabai and Boke Maucey held hands and, although asked to walk, they ran together and laughed all the way.

The men had to run to the far wall and then back to put on a sari and carry a bucket of water to the finishing line. They provided much amusement for the onlookers.
 
The Prize giving began at 5pm


We had  the "Twelve Days of Christmas song" with illustrations by Sainath to guide the singers. It  was a fun filled event with my antics conducting the singing.


Prizes were given for the top three Carom, Scrabble and Snakes and Ladders winners. Everybody who participated in the walking horse race received 101 rupees and Bisham and Kaushalya shared first prize having each walked 39 circuits of the track.


Meenakshi sang a song for us and so did Smita,






 Sainath sang for us too. Vilas made a speech about Awaas and Smita thanked Ashok for the Christmas celebrations.



 I was told by one resident that he had enjoyed this Chrismas more
than many recent ones.

It remains for me to thank all the staff and residents for taking part in the festivities and to wish Everybody a Happy New Year with many Blessings and Good Health.

 November/December Events Since Divali some of the resident’s rooms have been repainted. Their walls are all being done in a soft yellow colour but they have a choice of lilac, mushroom, sky blue and pista for the interior doors and wardrobes. I remarked that in Bihar I had noticed that many kirana shops painted their shelves lilac and was told that it is a colour that is reputed to keep mosquitoes and flies away. I was also informed that lilac is the colour of the goddess Laxmi so is associated with prosperity   - useful if you have a shop! We have a new resident in the Awaas goshalla. A girl calf was born at 1.30am   on 28 th November. She is creamy white and very pretty. When I walk around the track in the mornings I say hello to her and she turns to me, moving her ears at the sound of my voice, which is higher pitched than her usual male visitors. I have called her Anandi. I mislaid my ATM card one day, between the badminton court and the dining room

The Photo Competition

  I  confess to taking lots of photos but that is only when I am on holiday. I take them home and eventually get round to editing them and deleting the worst. My favourite editor was Picasa but that early Google product has been abandoned and replaced by Google Photos. If, like me, you take crooked buildings and un-parallel columns, you would have liked easy to use straightening tool. However, although my old photos are safe with Picasa, my new ones seem to be demanding a place on a cloud or asking me for money to increase my space! I noticed that most residents have smartphones so I wondered if they, like the younger generation, were 'snap happy' - meaning that they took lots of photos.  Judging to the response to the invitation to enter a photo competition, it seems not. I have come to the conclusion that smart phones are mainly used to send videos to one another on Whatsapp, accompanied by an invitation to forward them to friends near and far. Being free it is well used.

The board games and carrom are nearly completed

  Awaas from the Manya Garden   We have still  four people to play Scrabble.and then the walking competition will begin. oranges will be given to all participants. Awaas has an all weather walking track around the Prem Toshniwal garden . Residents have estimated how many rounds of the track they will complete, but they can do more if they feel capable. Altogether 20 residents are taking part this year.   Another addition to the Christmas programme this year, besides  Connect 4, is a Photo Competition. There will be three subjects, portrait, nature and general. So far there are only two photos submitted but I will have to persuade some of  the smart phone owners to take part.. It seems that the older generation are not snap happy! You may be wondering where I got the 4000000 rupees to send to India for Covid treatment in Bihar. I set myself a challenge. In 2019 I cycled just over 1000 miles in England and France to raise money for Awaas. This time I had to aim higher to attract donation
